An audio clip has been circulating among Muslim WhatsApp groups in Hong Kong of a man claiming that the Yaqut’s Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Beef Noodles restaurant, located in Tin Hau sells pork and has cross-contamination in their menu offerings. This caused confusion and concern within the Muslim community online.
The Trustees have issued the following statement on their official Facebook page:
“On the 24th June 2024 at 2:15pm, two of our Halal Auditors visited the Yaqut’s Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Beef Noodles restaurant. After thorough inspection of the restaurant and menu, we can confirm that the restaurant does not serve any pork or other non-halal dishes, neither are they mentioned anywhere in the restaurant.
The restaurant is fully certified Halal with a Halal Kitchen Restaurant certificate. Though the restaurant does serve alcohol, for which they have clearly labeled the item as Non-Halal. Therefore, all speculations regarding the restaurant serving non-halal meat are false.”
A copy of the statement is available below.
Mufti Mohammad Shoaib, the assistant Imam of Kowloon Mosque in Islamic Centre, has also posted a video on the official Facebook page of the Trustees clarifying that the claims made in the audio clip are false.
In the video, Mufti Shoaib stated the following:
“The pictures that are circulating [in social media] where there is a pork item is being served [at the restaurant] or that pork is being cooked [at the restaurant]. On this basis, our members [from the Trustees] went to the restaurant to double check the kitchen as well as the menu and that [they have found] that there are no pork items [that] are being served.
And they saw the menu as well — the pictures that were being shared, those were old pictures where they did not get a Halal certificate and the [picture] was on the internet and it [started] circulating from there.
Our members from the Halal Department went and checked [the halal status of the restaurant] and they also had the halal certificate from the Board of Trustees. And so please be assured that there is no pork being served in this restaurant.
And one thing is important to note — at the end of the menu there is alcohol — let me share the video of that — those who went and checked… but it has been clearly labeled as “non-Halal”. I hope this clears the matter.”
